Meeting Minutes

November 8th, 2001

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:10 PM                                                                                             Number of attendees: 29

National Parks Service John Manson from the National Park Service says mutt mitts are on order and delivery should be soon. He is interested in some type of cost-sharing ideas for mutt mitts since the Park Service spent $1500 on mutt mitts last year. Kevin said people should be bringing up their own bags and recycling any kind of bag they have to use as a mutt mitt. John Manson also said that the superintendent, Terry Savage, is interested in comments (good and bad) about dogs in parks. The email is bost_superintendent@nps.gov . Phone # is 617-242-5645.  For other dog ideas, email John at john_manson@nps.gov. John will bring sample cards to the next meeting to hand out to dog owners as an educational tool. That way people won’t need to become confrontational to other dog owners if they mention picking up after their dogs. The 100-year anniversary of the Park will be on Saturday, March 16. The Park Service is looking for a speaker.

Mayor’s Office - Anthony Gilardi, the Mayor’s Representative, stated that he had the barrel at the bottom of the Golden Stairs moved from the side of the road to a more convenient location.

National Historic Register - Kevin Delehanty stated that the December meeting will feature Ellen Lipsy from the Boston Landmarks Commission, and Andrea D’Amato from Environmental Services. They will give a final presentation for the Heights to be included in the National Register of Historic Places. Kevin says we need to publicize this - we will need a committee or volunteers to distribute handbooks to homeowners.

South Boston High School - Tom Pilleri from So. Boston HS had dumpster info. He consulted with Resource Management for a trial run for the dumpster in back of the HS. The truck couldn’t get in the back of the school and split the tires trying to do so. Some of the concrete would need to be jack hammered off the school for the truck to fit and it would be impossible with snow. The next step is for Planning and Engineering Dept. to take a look at the dumpsters. Their idea was to "beautify" dumpsters – fix fences, attach slats, etc. Mr. Pilleri says the company will drag out dumpsters every few weeks to clean around and underneath. He also requested the company empty the dumpster closer to 7:00 am vice 6:00 am. He said that people from the neighborhood are still using the dumpster. Mr. Pilleri also says people who park in the schoolyard must leave by 6:15 am. A suggestion was made to shorten the wall on No Man’s Land, that would fit the dumpster. Mr. Pilleri wanted to make a correction to last month’s minutes- there were 39 pull-stations incidents not 39 fire alarms as reported, and that there are 3 new science stations not 1. There is now an alternative school for older students i.e. 18, 19, 20 year olds so they are not in classrooms with younger students.

High School Dumpster -  Rob Roy is the Director of Facilities Management for the School Dept. His phone # is 617-635-8300. He will listen to dumpster ideas.

SEE YOU ALL AT THE NEXT MEETING!
