Meeting Minutes

February 13th, 2003

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM                                                                                             Number of attendees: 14

National Park ServiceJohn Manson reported to the Association that the Evacuation Day ceremony will take place on March 17, 2003 at 10:00 A.M.  John will also be doing his annual Evacuation Day slide presentation at our March 13th meeting.   Come early to get a good seat!

Boston Police Officer Rich Doherty reported there were very few reported incidents in our neighborhood during the previous month.

South Boston High School Tom Pilleri reported that all is quiet at the High School.  He reported that Superintendent Thomas Payzant doesn’t want to change the name of the high school without the support of the community.  Tom provided some school statistics: 19% of students are residents of South Boston; 78% of last year’s graduating class went on to further education, earning almost 1 million dollars in scholarships.

Senator Jack Hart’s Office Matt Sances reported that the Senator will have Library hours in South Boston every first Friday from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Washington Village branch, and every third Wednesday from 10:00 to 12:00 at the East Broadway branch.  Matt also reported on the parking meeting held last month at the Tynan Community School.  He reminded us that it is the responsibility of the neighborhood residents to initiate the Resident Parking program in their neighborhood.  A neighborhood is defined as an area covering a minimum of five blocks, and a minimum of 50% plus one must be in favor in order for the neighborhood to be approved.  Contact Joe Rull at the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services (617-635-3485) for more information.

Major General Henry Knox Square Dedication - The intersection located at the top of Telegraph Street, Old Harbor Street and Thomas Park will be dedicated and named “Major General Henry Knox Square” on Saturday, March 15, 2002 at 9:00am, Thomas Tinlin, Honorary Chairperson, Bill Foley, Jack Forbush, John Manson, William "Doc" Reid Co-Chairmen.

Knox Trail Marker Rededication – There is a new marker being placed up on the Dorchester Heights during this ceremony Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 10:30am, Post Master Michael Powers, Honorary Chairman, Bill Foley, Jack Forbush, John Manson, William "Doc" Reid Co-Chairmen.

Message from the President - I would like to take a moment and ask that all members attempt to make this very important meeting on March 13th.  We have much to discuss and our numbers at the meetings have been growing smaller.  We cannot get the Association’s business done when so few of us are in attendance.  We need to make a final decision on an Easter Egg hunt, kick off the BBQ committee, discuss this spring’s neighborhood clean up and take your temperature on neighborhood parking. I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting and I would like to ask for maximum DHA Member participation for the two events scheduled for Saturday, March 15, 2003.
