Meeting Minutes

February 8th, 2001

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM                                                                                             Number of attendees: 67

National Parks ServiceMarc Vagos reminded us that John Manson will be providing the DHA with an updated version of the Evacuation Day slideshow during our March 8th, 2001 meeting. The March 17th Evacuation Day program will be held from 10am to 3pm in the park. There will be musket and artillery firings. The monument will also be opened so if you haven’t seen the view from up there it is definitely worth the climb. John Manson also thanked Cheryl McLaughlin for saving the flag and hardware after it had been torn from the flagpole.

National Historic Register NominationEllen Lipsey, Jen Goold, Phil Burgen all spoke to us about the significance of the Dorchester Heights neighborhood being placed on the National Historic Register. They also helped to ease a lot of fears about being able to do things to your property without prior approval. Basically you can do anything you want to your property as long as it doesn’t involve State or Federal funding or permits. This would trigger a review of your project. If you are using just City permits or funding there is no review process other than the normal City building permit reviews.

Ed Gordon provided an outstanding slide show of the district along with many historical facts. There are a total of 225 properties in this historic district. The district encompasses parts of Dorchester St., E 4th, E 8th, G St., and most of what is in between with the Monument being in the center of the district. Dorchester Heights is the first district in South Boston to be placed on the National Register.

There will be a final public meeting to be held in June 2001 at the Archives building. A notice will be mailed to all homeowners and notices will be in the newspapers.

Boston PoliceSgt. Bill Meade and Patrolman Rich Doherty told us there weren’t too many incidents this past month. Patrols have been increased and they are looking for double parked cars in the neighborhoods. The cars are being cited and could possibly be towed. We have a new Capt at district 6. His name is Capt. Robert Cunningham. Capt. Crowley now works at Headquarters.

SEE YOU ALL AT THE NEXT MEETING!
